Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word"association. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford applied instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford did not finish her studies in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies, which were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
